Irvine School Lice Policy

Irvine’s policy deviates substantially and is the strictest one we found. It reads as such: “Any student found to have head lice, detected by a live louse or lice eggs (nits),will be removed from the classroom and excluded from attendance. The parent will receive written instructions on the treatment of head lice and a verification of treatment form that must be signed by the parent before the student can be readmitted. A student will be allowed up to two excused absences for head lice treatment. Any additional absences will be counted as unexcused. The principal and the school nurse shall work with the parent of any student who has been deemed to be a chronic case in order to help minimize the student's absences from school. Upon return to the school, the parent must accompany the student and remain present during a lice check. To prevent further spread, the district will require that all live lice and all nits be removed before a student can attend school. The school nurse or office staff member must approve re-admittance to the school.”

Newport-Mesa Unified School District Lice Policy

Newport-Mesa Unified School District policy includes that the school nurse is notified when head lice are suspected. “ If the case is confirmed the child’s parents are notified and the student is “excluded." Parents need to show evidence of treatment when the child returns to school. Students with active cases of head lice should be examined one month after treatment to establish treatment success. The health office maintains a confidential “Lice” log.”

Tustin School Lice Policy

In Tustin a student needs to stay home from school and be treated. “Children may return to school when the hair is lice- free and they can show proof of treatment. Tustin families need to notify the school if your child has head lice.”

Los Alamitos School Lice Policy

Los Alamitos district has a “no lice” policy that requires lice treatment.

Santa Ana School Lice Policy

In Santa Ana parents are instructed to keep children home from school with head lice until treated.

Anaheim School Lice Policy

In Anaheim, if a student is found with active, adult head lice,” he/she shall be excluded from attendance. The parent/guardian of an excluded student shall receive information about recommended treatment procedures and sources of further information. The student shall be allowed to return to school the next day and shall be checked by the nurse or designee before returning to class. Once he/she is determined to be free of lice, the student shall be rechecked weekly for up to 6 weeks.” In general, LiceDoctors recommends that parents take time to contact your local school district to ascertain the school head lice policy. One district may have a strict “no nit” policy while a nearby school district may be more lenient regarding re-admission after head lice infestation.
