LiceDoctors Torrance, California Lice Removal FAQs

WHAT DO HEAD LICE LOOK LIKE?

Lice have 3 stages of growth. They start out as a nit or an egg, then the immature stage is called a nymph, and then you have the adult louse. Eggs, or nits, are very small (imagine a knot tied in thread) and are oval shaped. They vary in color and can match the hair that they are glued to. One tell-tale sign that you are looking at a nit is that it will be stuck to the hair near the head. Nymphs look like the adults only much smaller and they take about 9-12 days to go from hatching to adult.  Adults are about the size of a sesame seed and can vary in color depending on the hair color around them.  They range from a dark tan to an almost grey-white. They have 6 legs and the females are larger than the males. Technicians in the Torrance, CA area are experts at identifying lice in all their stages.

HOW LONG DO LICE LIVE?

The life span of lice is roughly 30 days as long as they are on a human head and able to feed on their blood.  If they happen to fall off of their host they will die within a day or two.  The adult female can lay up to 6 eggs a day so you can see that the number will increase quickly if the cases is not tended to.

WHAT SIGNS OF LICE SHOULD I LOOK FOR?

It doesn’t matter if you are in Torrance, CA or on the other side of the world, the signs are the same: a tickling feeling like something moving in the hair; Itching which is caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse and can be mild or severe; difficulty sleeping because head lice are most active in the dark; and sores on the head which is caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected from bacteria found on the person’s skin.
