Schools in Shreveport are either in Caddo Parish school district or Bossier Parish school district. Policies are quite different in these districts.

Sometimes children feel better reading or being read a book about head lice. Some books are informative and some are funny and some are both.

Both Palmdale and Lancaster School districts will allow students to remain in class if they have nits only. If live lice are found, the students’ parents or guardians will be notified and they will be sent home to begin treatment.

Schools in the Daly City area follow the current recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and do not exclude children from the classroom because of symptoms of head lice, either live bugs or nits.

Getting lice can be unnerving but remember lice are a just a nuisance that can be eliminated. Lice tech, Dana, shares her story.

Schools in the Centennial area do not exclude children from the classroom for either live bugs or nits.

Schools in the Palo Alto and Menlo Park areas are in agreement with current guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics with regard to the management of head lice in school. They do not hold to a strict no-nit policy but exclude children solely on the presence of live lice.

Schools in the Sunnyvale and Mountain View areas do not enforce a strict “no nit” policy for cases of head lice. Children will be excluded from the classroom if live lice are found, but not if only nits are present.

School districts can vary in their response to head lice from city to city and from school to school.
