Different school districts set the policies for the schools in their area, and these can be very different, even when the schools in question are in close proximity. Schools in Walnut Creek do not hold to a “no-nit” policy, while nearby Concord and Pleasant Hill in the Mount Diablo school district DO restrict children from the attendance even if treatment has begun and all live bugs are removed; the presence of eggs or nits is sufficient for exclusion.

Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill

Lice: While not a medical issue, the presence of lice and nits is considered highly contagious and isolation/exclusion from school is required. If your child has lice, please inform the office immediately and treat your child at home. Your child must be free of live lice before returning to school. Parents will be notified when a student in their child’s classroom has lice so they can monitor their children.

Concord and Pleasant Hill

To prevent the spread of head lice infestations, school employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice to the school nurse or designee as soon as possible. The nurse or designee shall examine the student and any siblings of affected students or members of the same household. If nits or lice are found, the student shall be excluded from attendance and parents/guardians informed about recommended treatment procedures and sources of further information.

Excluded students may return to school when (1) they bring a note from the parent/guardian verifying treatment, and (2) reexamination by the nurse or designee shows that all nits and lice have been removed.
